The Washoe Legal Services (WLS) Child Advocacy Program focuses on Child Protective Services (CPS) cases, minor guardianship cases, and adoptions. WLS Child Advocacy attorneys represent the following:
- Children who have been removed from their parents’ custody due to allegations of abuse and neglect
- Children who are under the jurisdiction and protection of a court-appointed guardian
- Prospective adoptive parents who want to adopt a child in foster care or adopt an adult who has aged out of the foster care system.
Generally speaking, we accept children as clients through a court order appointing us as a child’s attorney. We do, however, sometimes accept referrals from the community. If you want to refer a child to us for representation, contact us today or submit a completed referral form. Our child advocacy attorneys represent the child ONLY and do not represent the interests of any other party to the case such as the child’s parents or CPS. If you are a parent whose child is involved with CPS, you should contact your local public defender’s office.
WLS provides low-cost representation to prospective adoptive parents who want to adopt a child who is in foster care or adopt an adult who has aged out of foster care. If you are a prospective adoptive parent and want to request representation, contact us today or submit a completed adoption intake form.
